Is Jesus Relevant Today?

It has been 20 long centuries since Jesus walked along the shores of Galilee, teaching something about a "Kingdom that is not like other Kingdoms". Much has changed ever since. Cultures, geographical boundaries, languages, technology - change is everywhere. What once used to be inconceivable is considered normal today. Travel, communication, entertainment and healthcare - just to name a few - have taken giant leaps in the past centuries. And yet, the proponents of Christianity claim that Christ is relevant even after 2000 years of his adieu.

If Jesus is to be considered relevant in today's world, he has to fulfill at least 3 criteria:

     1.   His teachings should not be forced upon anybody,
     2.   His character should be morally exemplary,
     3.   He has to somehow be above the changes of "time".

Jesus never compelled anybody to follow him, nor did his true followers threaten anybody into Christianity. If He had, then he would have lost the credibility to invite us to accept him. If will is disregarded, then a loving, meaningful relationship becomes impossible.

The character of Jesus is indeed the finest example of moral excellence. He expressed love for the outcast, and stood firmly against the abuse of those in the religious power echelons. On the one hand he fought to protect the sanctity of the place of worship, but on the other, he stood silently at the face of painful, false-accusations.

Though a lot of water has gone down through the river Jordan since Jesus' time, his message still echoes through all continents with the same firmness and gentleness. How can a man who was crucified (Challenge yourself to find a worse kind of death!) centuries ago, still have a message for the 21st century careless youngster? Jesus is still alive. That's how. Sounds simple, but think about it. If death is not dealt with, then life is meaningless. Somebody correctly said, "Death is philosophy's only problem!" The resurrection of Jesus is a historic event, not a legend that developed years later. His immediate followers lived, preached and died for that truth. They had nothing to gain but a lot to lose with the proclamation of Jesus as the Savior of the World. Yet they chose to die for him.
